CORGI (the Council for Registered Gas Installers) is the National Watchdog for Gas Safety in the United Kingdom.

By law, all businesses carrying out gas work MUST be registered with Corgi. Ensure your installer is a member by asking for their Corgi ID card, if in doubt ring 01256 372300


The federation of master builders homepage.

These 2 logos are usually displayed side by side as the FMB are members of the EBC.

They are a non-profit organisation representing mainly small and medium sized companies, and operate the Masterbond warranty scheme, which gives customers an insurance backed guarantee of satisfactory workmanship and materials.

As so much legislation concerning the construction trade is now in Europe, the FMB became a founder member and an active voice within the European Builders Confederation, a group of national building federations representing small and medium sized building businesses among the member states of the European Union and Switzerland.

Membership fee approx £330 + vat, and one off joining fee of £185 + vat.


Companies who are members of this organisation have 10 - 15 names and addresses selected at random from previous work records, and a consumer survey, conducted by their vetting department. Their personnel will, establish the standard of work carried out. Financial checks are also made by them to ascertain the stability of any company wishing to become Fair Trades registered.

Public liability insurance and publicly recognised qualifications are encouraged in all cases.

It is not unusual for up to 30% of companies applying for membership to be rejected.

Founded in 1906, the Institute of Plumbing is the UK's professional body for plumbers and others in the plumbing industry. It has a membership of 11500. All members listed have had to prove their plumbing competence through recognised qualifications or extensive experience.

The Institute is a registered educational charity with the prime objective of improving the science, practice and engineering principles of plumbing in the public interest. Its members support this aim and agree to a 5-point Code of Professional Standards.

The Homepage for the Scottish and Northern Ireland plumbers employers federation. The most important thing from the customers point of view, is that they will provide financial compensation or another plumber to finish work started by a SNIPEF plumber and not finished.

The Guild Of Master Craftsmen represents various trades. Companies must be recommended by a minimum of four referees, and pass the GMC's own selection procedure to qualify.

If your tradespeople have the City and Guilds qualification, it is a guarantee that you have a genuine tradesperson.


Dulux's own organisation for their approved painters and decorators. They provide customers with a free 12 months guarantee on all painting and decorating work as part of their quality guarantee.


The National Federation Of Roofing Contractors, offer an insurance backed guarantee that members will finish work, and members agree to abide to their Code of Practice.
